Abstract/Summary:
Answers were sought to the following two questions: (1) What attitudes are held by grade three, grade eight, and grade eleven students toward the areas of science and technology? and (2) What attitudes are held by grade three, grade eight, and grade eleven students toward scientific and technological careers?;This study found that the most favourable attitudes toward science were expressed by third grade students, next most favourable by eleventh grade students and the least favourable by grade eight students. In general science students found their science classes to be fun and interesting and they felt that their science experiences made them feel curious about their natural world. Science students felt their science teachers encouraged them to present their own ideas. Students identified that they desire relevant curriculum. They want "science", "technology", "practical information that can be useful to everyone" and they want "information that they will need for the future".;On the whole, Edmonton science students appear to hold a reasonably realistic view of science as a career. Students identified that they valued science and technology and that they had a high opinion of people who were scientists, however, students did not see themselves as pursuing a scientific career.;In regard to technology, this research found that as grade level increased students, in turn, provided a more mature understanding of technology.
