Radars use multiple Pulse Repetition Frequencies (PRF) to extend their unambiguous range. Two methods used to implement a multiple PRF scheme are the ambiguous and unambiguous range detection modes. The unambiguous range detection mode divides a beam dwell into mini-dwells for each of the PRF, and a detection is declared if the unambiguous range of the target is determined. The ambiguous range detection mode, on the other hand, does not divide a beam dwell. Therefore, multiple beams or scans with different PRF are required to determine the unambiguous range of the target. The ambiguous range detection mode increases the detection range and track duration of a radar at the expense of additional false alarms. To quantify the improvement of the ambiguous range detection mode, a radar simulation program was used to test both detection modes. In addition, the changes in the positional accuracy was analyzed in detail. |
