Abstract/Summary:
This study focused on identifying specific job characteristics of 1986 and 1987 bachelor's degree graduates of computer-related programs of Michigan public and private colleges and universities.;A survey instrument was mailed to 2,166 graduates in January 1989. Data were compiled on major degree area, job characteristics in computer-related occupations--particularly concerning computer programming--as well as on curricula and future career plans.;A majority (91.1 percent) of the graduates do computer programming as part of their job and the development of new programs is the main component of the programming performed. Computer programs are primarily written for mainframe computers and COBOL is the primary language used. Programming courses were rated as the most beneficial courses, but more interpersonal communications courses are needed. The use of the microcomputer (IBM and compatible) is an important component of computer-related occupations.
