Conceptualizing the college experience of LGB international students from China

Abstract/Summary:
This exploratory qualitative study seeks to understand the college experience of LGB international students from China, especially with regards to how they make meaning of the multidimensions of their identities. The narratives of subjects operated as a lens, giving insight on how sexual identity and cultural factors are interconnected within students' higher education experience in the United States. This study contributes to the limited body of knowledge on non-heterosexual individuals from China who pursues higher education in the U.S. Three primary factors surfaced as themes from the participants' interviews: The Influence of Heteronormativity, Acculturation, and Identity Formation. Implications for future research and practices are discussed.
