Abstract/Summary:
This political science policy project is based on an analysis of a special group of welfare recipients. It is a case study assessment and analysis of black female heads of households in the content of the 1980s budgetary policies.; Against the background of the Reagan administration's budgetary policies these women struggle with day-to-day survival as recipients of public assistance. Budget cuts terminated 400,000 low income working families nationally (most of them female headed) from the AFDC program. Over 725,000 families lost their AFDC eligibility by 1986.; Poverty exists at great cost to society in decreasing property values, crime, delinquency, and the loss of individual potential. The budgetary policies of the 1980s has increased these costs with cuts in social programs and increased spending in military. This work shows how the quality of life for some black female heads of households has decreased and explores the difficulties of living on welfare. (Abstract shortened with permission of author.)...
