Abstract/Summary:
Elemental Essence is a dance performance that reveals the profound depths of the ancestral lineage of Afro-Brazilian cultural practices, by way of the transatlantic slave trade, the resistance of the Quilombo culture, traced back to an origin in Israel. The structure of the dance performance is divided into four sections which reflect the four elements of nature: earth, water, air, and fire which correspond to the areas of research that I conducted. The forces of the elements are expressed through the research of folkloric movement forms of Orixa dances, the teachings of Rosangela Silvestre and the Silvestre Technique, expressed on stage, in a contemporary context. The presentation of this work was presented in the LeFevre Theatre on the Saint Mary's College campus as a culmination of the graduate studies program in Dance: Creative Practice, where the live performance component occurred on June 17th and 18th of 2017.
