| Palnj: an Interdisciplinary Thesis Performance is a study of the elemental materials of music, dance, and poetry; that is sound, movement, and text. I compose music, dance, and poetry as simultaneous, interdependent, and interactive modes of performance that draw from the range of histories, practices, and techniques unique to each discipline.;The following pages document the making of Palnj: an Interdisciplinary Thesis Performance from 2013-2014 and its performance at San Diego State University on February 6-8, 2014. I include critical introductions to each section of the performance, descriptions of the creative process, historical precedents, and theoretical bases for which I combined music, dance, and poetry. In addition to expository writing, I also include poetry, music notation, verbal notation, photographs, and video to serve as a composite, hybrid score to facilitate future performances. The DVD, an appendix to the thesis, is available for viewing at the Media Center of Library & Information Access. I utilize a diversity of media to discuss, notate, compose, and document the different elements that comprise the work. Each medium demonstrates different aspects of the performance: music and verbal notation demonstrates compositional elements, photographs demonstrate visual elements, and video demonstrates physical movement and time relationships between visual and sonic elements.;The purpose of my thesis is to expand compositional and aesthetic possibilities of music, dance, and poetry by intermingling performance disciplines, studying their intersections, and innovating modes of interaction throughout the creative process. I utilize sound, movement, and text as potential materials and modes for composing across performance disciplines. I conceive music as choreography, the incidental sounds of dance as music, and poetry as an impetus for composing music from speech sounds. |
