Abstract/Summary:
This thesis paper, and the accompanying choreography and design project presented with the title - 'Asrutam - The Unheard Voice of Devadasis', explores the design process, and execution of lighting for theatrical dance. While the dance itself is based on a historic concept dating back to the 10th century on the Devadasis (performing artists of ancient Indian temples) who passed down their art form to our generation, the study focuses on re-creating the historic image of what was perceived through my research, on stage using design elements. The paper moves between the design process for Indian Classical Dance and Modern Dance, the approach in terms of the colors, intensity, and lighting angles.
