Abstract/Summary:
Published in 1960, This Side Jordan is Margaret Laurence's first novel. Set in Ghana at the eve of Independence, it opposes tradition and modernity through the interaction of two groups of Ghanaian and British characters trying to assert their identity at the onset of Ghana's independance.;This thesis presents a reflection on the French translation of Margaret Laurence's first novel. We have focused on the plurality of discourses that prevail among the two sets of characters, and the transfer of such discourses through translation. The main question behind this exercise is the following: Is it possible to substitute a multiplicity of discourses held in English in 1960 with other discourses in a different language and more than 50 years later? Could they be considered identical? Our search for an answer relies on discourse analysis, on a range of illustrations of such discourses inscribed in translation, and on various works by translation studies scholars as well as researchers from other related disciplines.
