My thesis paper is designed to clarify how Gore Vidal developed his voices as a public intellectual to lead the American people to more civilized and responsible citizens through making himself a bridge between the elite establishment and the people. Although he was highly evaluated as a first-rate essayist, the individual definite reasons for his essays' effective provocation are not articulated in any single criticism.;The broad purpose of this thesis is to clarify and offer a more systematically exact analysis of what is lacking in Vidal criticism mainly in light of the writer's voices and the readers' response. Specifically, this thesis argues that, as perverse public intellectual, Gore Vidal evokes many voices, reflecting his varied (and sometimes contradictory) personas, to distance and provoke the very individuals he purports to support. |
