Abstract/Summary:
This work investigates how collecting music, as a behavioral and social practice, is affected by changing digital formats. I use interviews with seven Latin American collectors of early Caribbean popular music to situate recent discourses of migrating recording formats, archive management, and cultural patrimony. By focusing on a particular type of collecting, that of sounds, the conversation can be extended to issues related to sharing practices, preservation and the shifting value of items in a collection. Another layer of investigation will consider the geographical and cultural specificity of the subjects that are interviewed.
