The Brethren in Christ Church originated in the Susquehanna Valley of Pennsylvania around 1778. In 1788 the first members of the Church immigrated to Canada.;This thesis traces the development of the Brethren in Christ Church in Canada from 1788 to the present. An account is given of the growth of the six districts which now comprise the Brotherhood. Five of these districts are located in Ontario; the sixth district is in Saskatchewan. In addition to these districts there are various missions.;The Brethren in Christ are conservative in their doctrine and practices. One of their most marked characteristics is plain clothes. Nonresistance both in peace an in war is another strong doctrine of the Church. Other outstanding features of this group are the doctrine of separation from the world and the love feasts. The policy of the Church in holding to a strict order has been breaking down so that in such areas as dress, recreation, and education a more liberal attitude is beginning to grow. | | Keywords/Search Tags: | Brethren, Christ, Church | PDF Full Text Request | Related items |
