Abstract/Summary:
At the time of initial research data gathering in June, 2013, the cancer data reporting process in use at a large Midwestern health system was utilizing the College of American Pathologist's (CAP) standard checklists, with data being transmitted into the patient chart via transcription services. However, the electronic version, CAP eCC, had not yet been implemented.;Primary research was done to establish the path of cancer patient data transmission in a large Midwestern health system's current health information exchange process. Scholarly articles and internet search were utilized to discover historic reporting methods and current trends in global efforts to electronically connect to share cancer patient research data. An interview with a large Midwestern health system's IT Applications Manager was conducted to research the typical protocol used to implement a new software product.;A power point presentation was created and presented to the IT Applications Manager. An implementation guide was written detailing the steps required for investigation, approval, and implementation of CAP eCC at a large Midwestern health system, and includes an implementation timeline.;CAP eCC, the electronic version of the gold standard, was developed in 2010 for the seamless electronic transference of cancer data when transmitted in local, national and international health information exchange. It can also provide clinician satisfaction with real-time access to global cancer research data and treatment innovations. Most importantly, use of CAP eCC can contribute positively to the quality of cancer patient care at home and around the world.
