Abstract/Summary:
Hypertension is a prevalent disease with many systemic side effects. In the eye, hypertension's effect on retinal blood vessels can be directly visualized through the pupil. By using an adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscope (AOSLO), this study compares measurements of the blood vessel walls in people with hypertension and those without hypertension at different levels of the retinal vasculature. The results showed an increase in wall to lumen ratios of retinal arteries in hypertensive individuals, an effect that was more pronounced in smaller arteries.
