Abstract/Summary:
The present study examined the T-scores of individuals with sexual addiction on the MMPI-2 Validity, Clinical, RC, Content, Supplementary, and PSY-5 Scales in order to gain better understanding of individuals with sexual addictions, and to examine for potential elevations when compared to the mean of 50 with a standard deviation of 10 obtained from the MMPI-2 Manual. In the present study, individuals with sexual addiction were predicted to demonstrate elevations to the comparative sample on the means of the following scales: Scale 2-Depression, Scale 4-Psychopathic Deviate, Scale 7-Psychasthenia, Scale 9-Hypomania, RCd- Demoralization, RC2- Low Positive Emotions, RC9- Hypomanic Activation, ANX- Anxiety, OBS- Obsessiveness, DEP- Depression, AGGR- Aggressiveness, DISC-Disconstraint, NEGE-Negative Emotionality/Neuroticism, MAC-R- MacAndrews Alcoholism-Revised, AAS- Addiction Admissions, APS- Addiction Potential Scale. Although the above mentioned scales were the only ones focused on in the hypothesis, all Validity, Clinical, RC, Content, Supplementary, and PSY-5 scales were analyzed for potential information. A one-group t-test was conducted to compare the means on each examined scale to the mean of 50 with a standard deviation of 10 obtained from the MMPI-2 Manual. A Bon Ferroni correction was then applied to the original significance threshold of p=.05 for all 63 MMPI-2 scales reducing the significance threshold to p=.001. Results indicated that the individuals with sexual addictions scored higher and reached statistical significance on 11 of the hypothesized scales when compared to the mean of 50 with a standard deviation of 10 obtained from the MMPI-2 Manual. Five scales that were hypothesized about did not reach statistical significance. Descriptive statistics were calculated for Validity, Clinical, Restructured Clinical, Content, and Supplemental scales. Limitations of the present study include the use of archival data, thus preventing the ability for a more diverse demographic sample. This study yields data on personality features of individuals with sexual addictions seeking outpatient treatment as measured by the MMPI-2.
