Abstract/Summary:
As a tangible, handmade artifact from the South Carolina Lowcountry, the survival of Drayton Hall's mosaic quilt fragment provides a unique opportunity to further study the material culture of textiles in the region, and sheds light on the availability of textiles in Charleston, South Carolina. This thesis examines Drayton Hall's mosaic quilt fragment through a number of different lenses establishing consistency in trends and a date range of creation. In addition, comparison of the mosaic quilt fragment to a mosaic quilt top in the collection of the Charleston Museum provides a comparative analysis of regional trends. It also serves as evidence useful in determining the extent to which this pattern reflected a broader regional style found in the South Carolina Lowcountry. A close study of the English paper template pattern, fabrics used in the mosaic patchwork, and the text of the paper templates uncovers parts of the Drayton family's life previously obscured from the historical record.
