Abstract/Summary:
With the number of vehicles on roads drastically increasing every day, a simple, inexpensive as well as reliable alternative to the existing technique of vehicle detection using video cameras is needed. As an alternative to the video cameras, vehicle detection using Inductive loop detector and magnetometer was developed. This thesis describes a novel method of using programmable underground sensors through Universal Serial Radio Platform from National Instruments. The conventional communication by using Electromagnetic wave technique is inefficient underground since they undergo lot of attenuation. This method makes use of Electromagnetic induction and accurately gives information regarding the type of vehicle and the direction and can be extended to obtain information regarding speed of vehicle. This not only enables us to count the number of vehicles and classify them in scenarios where the expensive video cameras are not required but also detect the direction of their arrival and also can be improved to detect speed and also achieve the transmission of this information to a remote server. Here the system is programmed using LabVIEW and the features and advantages of LabVIEW is discussed.
