Abstract/Summary:
Environmentally controlled ultra-clean manufacturing facilities are continually attempting to reduce the level of contamination present to improve the manufacturing process. The presence of people within this uniquely controlled environment is widely recognized as a significant contributor of contamination. The personnel entrance to these clean facilities is called a gown room, referring to the activity of putting on the specialized clothing required. The purpose of this thesis was to determine the factors that affect the ability of the gown room to create an environment that maximizes the cleanliness of the worker entering the clean area. Three different existing gown room facilities were reviewed utilizing a survey that was distributed to gown room users. The results found that in all cases inadequate attention was placed on the gown room design. Also, recommendations were made on how the successful gown rooms might be configured.
