Abstract/Summary:
A unique high-resolution electromagnetic (EM) system, which utilizes a four-axis coil and a new calibration technique, has been designed and constructed by the Laboratory for Advanced Subsurface Imaging (LASI). In this thesis, we consider the testing of this EM system over a buried pipe at the San Xavier mine.;We begin by formulating the magnetic-field equations for a buried pipe model which simulates the actual field site and the target that will be used. Using the computer program, the solutions are then mathematically rotated so that the theoretical ellipticity profile is obtained.;We next measure the magnetic field using our EM system and plot the ellipticity profile over the buried pipe at the mine. This surveyed ellipticity profile is then matched with the theoretical ellipticity profile. The results indicate that our EM system emulates the theory. Finally, the buried pipes are located from our field survey. The results are shown in several figures.
