Abstract/Summary:
This thesis investigates the capabilities of the finite element modelling approach in the analysis and design of steel box girders. The investigation proceeds with the design of a steel box girder as part of the support system for a highway overpass. The design is generated by use of a FORTRAN 77 computer program based on AASHTO specifications. Output from the FORTRAN 77 design is then modeled using the SAP 86 Finite Element program. The completed model is compared to the model generated by the FORTRAN 77 program based on bending and shear stresses at several points along the span. The design of the box girder is carried out in an effort to optimize steel. Results of the analysis are discussed.
