In this design study, the feasibility of a composite aileron as a retrofittable item for light aircraft was investigated. The goal was to design, analyze, and build a composite aileron capable of replacing an existing aluminum aileron. A Finite Element Analysis procedure was conducted and satisfactory results for the selected laminate were obtained. Using relatively low-cost techniques, the bond fixtures and subsequent aileron parts were then built. A weight savings of 26% was achieved. Major conclusions of this design study are that a retrofittable composite aileron for light aircraft is both structurally and economically feasible. |
