Earthquakes and winter storms cause episodic landslides which dump large quantities of sediment into kelp forest communities along the northern and central coast of California. The major ecological impacts are from direct burial of sessile communities, sand scour, and deposition of suspended fine sediment in plumes. This study focused on the latter.
