Abstract/Summary:
Rapid qualitative analysis for the differentiation of proprietary brand and generic brand OTC (over the counter) pharmaceuticals by a handheld Raman spectrometer is proposed. This analysis was performed by taking Raman spectra of the tablets' core. Along with a qualitative analysis, a quantitative determination by using the same Raman instrument was performed. Acetylsalicylic acid along with three select fillers and sodium sulfate as an internal standard was used to create a calibration curve. Tablets of known origins but unknown dose amounts were prepared by grinding two tablets and adding an internal standard. All samples were lightly packed into glass vials and analyzed using the handheld Raman. Using this technique, it was found that none of the OTC pharmaceuticals tested is counterfeit and most are USP (U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention) acceptable. The technique needs to be validated by comparison with USP wet analysis methods.
