Abstract/Summary:
Properties of polycarbonate (PC) and polystyrene-acrylonitrile copolymer (SAN) and their blends were reviewed. Polymer blends of PC and SAN were melt blended at different compositions on a single screw extruder, pelletized, and injection molded. Standard physical tests were performed on the injection molded ASTM test specimens. Melt viscosities were measured with a capillary rheometer, tensile tests were conducted with an Instron tensile testing machine, flexural stiffness tests were measured with a Tinius Olsen Stiffness Tester, and hardness was examined by Rockwell hardness tester.;The melt viscosity test showed that increasing the PC content will increase the viscosity of the blends, and the blend melt viscosities are intermediate between the values of PC and SAN. The results of hardness showed that increasing the SAN content will increase the hardness. The flexural stiffness tests showed that increasing the SAN content will increase the flexural stiffness. Tensile properties showed a general trend to increase tensile strength with increasing SAN content.
