Titanium nitride coatings deposited on austenitic steel AISI 304 and on hot work tool steel AISI H13 with a triode-ionplating method are characterized with X-ray diffraction techniques. The titanium nitride coating thickness was in between 100nm and 1,5;The deposition of a titanium intermediate layer between titanium nitride and metallic substrates is regarded as an essential prerequisite to obtain a good titanium nitride coating adhesion. Measurements carried out with GXRD showed the formation of a nitrogen-austenite phase in the interface between titanium nitride and metallic substrates. These specimens also showed an unsufficient coating adhesion. These results lead to the formulation of a new hypothesis which correlates the early coating failure to the formation of a nitrogen-austenite phase in the interface between titanium nitride and metallic substrates.;Preferential orientation (PO) measurements are carried out on titanium nitride coatings in relation to the PO of the substrate materials. The PO of titanium nitride coatings with a thickness of less than 200nm is determined by the substrate material. These PO results are independent of the energy dissipation in the coating during growth (S;Finally residual stress measurements are carried out on titanium nitride coatings using the sin;It has been shown that the GXRD geometry is a useful technique to perform phase characterizations, preferential orientation measurements and residual stress measurements on coatings with a limited coating thickness. |
