This thesis focuses on understanding the structural and functional role spectrin plays in organizing the membrane cytoskeleton of the sea urchin egg and early embryo. Egg spectrin was purified from cytoplasmic extracts of sea urchin eggs, and shown to have biochemical, immunological, and structural features strongly conserved among members of the spectrin superfamily of proteins.
