Abstract/Summary:
This study examined preparation by caregivers for the future of individuals with developmental disabilities (DD/MR). Areas of planning in which caregivers required assistance, barriers to future planning, and preferences regarding conveyance of information were assessed. Of 1,049 caregivers surveyed, 397 eligible responses (37.8%) were analyzed to find trends in response patterns.; Most caregivers indicated they were unsure of areas in which they needed to plan, unaware of services available to persons with DD/MR, and dismayed by the fact that funding for service needs was unavailable through the state DD/MR agency. Caregivers specified a preference for one-on-one consultation with a knowledgeable caseworker, referrals to financial planners and lawyers familiar with the unique planning needs of persons with DD/MR, and financial assistance to pay for costs associated with making formal plans. Findings and implications for assisting caregivers with planning for the future of family members with developmental disabilities are outlined.
