Abstract/Summary:
It is increasingly evident that administrators and managers of an ever growing number of healthcare organizations have come to the conclusion that leaders in their institutions must establish compliance programs to better ensure that they are adequately and responsibly carrying out their various legal and ethical responsibilities and obligations. In this capstone, a literature review was conducted, which included basic federal laws aimed at reducing fraud and abuse in the provision of care. Also reviewed were significant statuses impacting the overall healthcare law enforcement climate to provide a comparison of compliance programs at three not-for-profit hospitals in the states of New York and Maryland. Although there is no one-size-fits-all approach to developing an effective compliance program, the data obtained from the literature review and the comparative analysis can be used as a user guide that outlines the most important steps when drafting a compliance program project to be developed and implemented. The literature review also revealed the existing resources on the topic of developing and implementing effective compliance programs in healthcare organizations. Findings from the comparison of the three compliance programs and the benefits of developing and implementing for the respective organizations are discussed. Future research on this topic may include quantitative analysis in order to substantiate the correlation between the strategies observed during the research and the success or failure of the implementation.
