Abstract/Summary:
Scientists from fields such as marine science, geology, hydrology, agriculture, and computer science, use images for their studies. This data includes satellite, radar and aerial images, digitized maps, and other spatial data in different formats, which they manipulate using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and image processing software. This report presents the development of a prototype of an image retrieval and processing system for the World Wide Web. It describes the components that constitute its architecture. The integration of a data warehouse, an image processing engine, and a Web server provides the mechanisms needed to centralize images, make intelligent searches, and process selected images. These components provide a complete solution to researchers from different fields that make use of images in their investigations. Also, since it can be deployed on the World Wide Web, it is possible to use it to retrieve and process images remotely.
