synchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) has become one of the most important research areas in digital communications. ATM is the new technology that integrates various traffic types into a single network. Since satellite communications have proven to be the most economical and efficient method in supporting different services, ATM via geostationary satellite networks will play an important role for Broad-band Integrated Digital Services Networks (B-ISDN). With fiber-optic as the main transmission medium for ATM, transmission errors are very low and delay is not a serious problem. Therefore, to provide a fiber-optic like performance for ATM transmission via satellite networks Forward-Error-Correction (FEC) codes are essential. In this thesis the analysis of the B-ISDN protocol stack for the ATM protocol is discussed. The different ATM Adaptation Layer (AAL) protocols are discussed in detail. An FEC coding scheme for the ATM cell header is presented and simulated. This FEC code design is a concatenation of the CRC (40,32) code defined by the ATM standard, and a convolutional code of rate 1/2 and...
