Abstract/Summary:
The problem of asset/object detection and localization has been receiving increasing attention, especially with all the recent developments in autonomous systems. There are major differences, however, between outdoor and indoor asset localization, since the use of ubiquitous Global Positioning System (GPS) cannot be made for the latter as the GPS signal is heavily attenuated indoors.;The current project discusses various approaches for developing a sensor network-based indoor localization system without using GPS. After consideration of hardware and software complexities, a localization method is presented based on the Received Signal Strength (RSS) and trilateration with three fixed beacons. The method is implemented using a Texas Instruments cc2430 ZigBee module and low cost Microchip PIC 18F452A microcontroller. Experimental results show that the method provides accurate indoor localization within the required specifications.
