Abstract/Summary:
An explicit rate control algorithm is proposed along with a bandwidth request algorithm for the transport of MPEG video over an ABR-like service over ATM. This form of closed-loop feedback-based control of real-time video traffic offers several advantages over conventional transport of video using the Constant Bit-Rate (CBR) and the Variable Bit-Rate (VBR) service classes of ATM. Detailed knowledge of the source video traffic statistics is not required for negotiating bandwidth at setup which makes it ideal for real-time video.; The proposed bandwidth request algorithm based on the delay experienced at the source buffer, is shown through simulations to compare favorably with a scheme based merely on the prediction of upcoming frame sizes. An explicit rate algorithm which allocates a fixed rate component equal to the negotiated minimum cell-rate and a variable rate component based on the request made and the available bandwidth at the current time, is also proposed. It is shown to offer better performance in terms of lower cell-loss and good frame delays as compared to an adaptation of an explicit rate control scheme proposed for data traffic.; The composite system with our proposed bandwidth request policy at the video sources and our explicit rate algorithm implemented at the network switches is shown to provide good quality of service for heavy network loads and high propagation delays.
