Abstract/Summary:
There is a potential for jobs and economic development for rural, small town Nova Scotia, due to the processing and shipment of natural gas via a route which will traverse five municipalities in north eastern Nova Scotia. But what effect will these jobs have on the small communities, such as County Harbour, Guysborough County, that are adjacent to the construction of the gas processing facilities? The Country Harbour area does not have an official plan, does not have professional planning staff (other than that provided by the Province) and only has building by-laws…thus the communities which will be directly impacted by the Sable Offshore Energy Project will be ill-equipped to protect their own interests.; Small rural communities are less likely to be experienced in dealing with large scale technology and complex development. Preparatory planning, which seeks to facilitate development while simultaneously conserving identified community attributes will have to be sought out in order to preserve the nature of the existing coastal and rural communities which may be impacted by such a large project.
