Abstract/Summary:
The Brno "street dialect" (henceforward, BSD) is spoken within the territory of the city of Brno, Moravia, Czech Republic by a selective group of individuals from all levels of society of various ages and occupations. BSD belongs to the general group of Central Moravian dialects, however as a city dialect under the influence of other spoken forms of Czech language, such as Common Czech and Colloquial Czech, can be classified as an interdialect. BSD is closely related to the form of Common Spoken Language in Brno.;The Czech language is a unique example of polyglossia, where besides the primary dialects there are other varieties of spoken Czech, with a divergent orthographic system and phonological and morphological rules.;BSD, which was already a communicative vehicle for speakers 100 years ago, has changed over decades, gaining increasing popularity among a larger minority population of Brno speakers.;The linguistic features of BSD are drawn from three main dialectal groups of Central Moravian Dialects with some influence of Common Czech. Foreign language influences are quite noticeable especially from German, Romani, English, and Yiddish. Among productive suffixes are those ending in -na, -ec, -;The thesis includes a lexicon which represents an updated version of the materials previously available, However, this version is neither full nor complete since BSD is in a constant growth and change. New names for places, objects and people continue enrich its vocabulary.
