Abstract/Summary:
This thesis documents the Royal British Columbia Museum's support of Kwakwa&barbelow;ka&barbelow;'wakw ceremony and art revitalization through their carving program and the Potlatch Collection and interprets its results. A history of the carving program's development and function along with an overview of the artists involved and their contributions to the Collection has been organized. Additionally, the study provides a catalog of the Potlatch Collection, and an analysis of the historical and ceremonial context of the art.;Primary sources include the Museum's annual reports and policy records, artifact catalogs, photographic records of potlatches, biographical files, and lists of materials loaned and commissioned, along with interviews with Museum curators and artists. Published accounts of potlatching, ethnological research, and art historical studies provided the context and the history of ceremony and art.
