Abstract/Summary:
The objectives of this work were to find out if sociolinguistic domains influence English language attrition in bilingual Puerto Ricans, to find out what linguistic skills undergo attrition and to what degree, and to find out which linguistic skill(s) suffer(s) the most.;To reach these objectives, the researcher administered a five-part questionnaire to 35 subjects selected from any part of the island of Puerto Rico. Out of the 35 subjects that completed the questionnaire, only 20 were interviewed to investigate if their self evaluations of English attrition were realistic or not.;Since the subjects no longer use English as much at work, church, and school in PR, they showed attrition in speaking, writing, and reading skills. It was found that the areas in which the most attrition occurred were specifically vocabulary, syntax, pronunciation, morphology, and fluency.;The subjects' most frequent reason for losing the language were the lack of practice and the lack of participants with whom to speak the language.
