Abstract/Summary:
This dissertation is the result of my interest in the relationship between history and literature in the Puerto Rico of the Nineteenth and early Twentieth centuries. The title of my dissertation is “Puerto Rican Testimonial Literature: Change and the Desire for Permanence (XIX–XX Centuries).”; The hypothesis of my thesis is that autobiographical literature in Puerto Rico is a cultural practice that challenges the kinds of conventional notions of the Puerto Rican past that have done little more than reflect, repeat or perpetuate the colonial model. I evaluate the historical conditions that have shaped the emergence of testimonial narrative in Puerto Rico. I analyze how these new voices relate to traditional ways of narrating and historicizing the past.
