Abstract/Summary:
The present catalog consists of 1097 works for cello written in Latin America, organized alphabetically by names of countries. Reference is made only to those countries in which there is information available about compositions written for the cello. Those are: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico, Uruguay and Venezuela. The documentation for the catalog has been taken from the music itself (when available) and from sources like music encyclopedias, composer's personal catalogs, liner notes to recordings and personal contact with composers from Latin America. The information is presented in identical form as it appears in the original material.;The works considered for inclusion in the catalog are original or arranged compositions for the following combinations: solo cello, cello and another instrument played by the same performer, cello and another instrument (cello and piano, cello and violin, cello and tape, etc...), concertos for cello and orchestra (symphony, chamber or ensemble), concertos for more than one instrument in which the cello has one of the solo parts and cello ensembles.;In the most complete form, each entry includes the following information: Composer's name, composer's dates of birth and death, short biographical entry, number of the work within the local catalog of each country, number of the work within the complete catalog, composition title, instrumental combination of the composition, date of composition, publisher, duration of the work, recordings and additional information.;Despite my efforts to present the most detailed and up-to-date information on every piece catalogued and composer represented, a large number of entries do not include complete information. These missing data have been difficult to trace. Some of these omissions have been the result of a lack of resources or, in some cases, faulty scholarship about the particular subjects.
