Abstract/Summary:
Background. Tuberculosis continues to be a major cause of global morbidity and mortality. The greatest burden of tuberculosis is carried by developing countries with high prevalence of malnutrition, HIV and populations of which >50% are children less than 15 years. Additionally, maternal tuberculosis has great clinical and economic impact on children. Due to the HIV pandemic, there has been a shift in the age distribution of tuberculosis in these countries. Since the majority of studies have not been completed in comparable populations, the Household Contact (HHC) study conducted by the CWRU Tuberculosis Research Unit (TBRU) is a unique and rich resource through which to study the impact of tuberculosis on children in less developed countries.;Specific aims. The specific aim of this study is to identify factors that mediate the transmission and development of active tuberculosis in pediatric household contacts of sputum smear positive tuberculosis cases in Kampala, Uganda.
