Abstract/Summary:
There has been little information about attitudes concerning breast cancer among Latinas, a large and growing population in the U.S. Although Latinas have had a lower rate of breast cancer, reports show these women are more likely to die from this disease due to later diagnosis and more advanced stage of cancer at the time of diagnosis. This literature review explores some of the cultural issues that impact Latinas' pursuit of health care services and breast cancer screening.; The Latino population is growing. Diversity is a key aspect of the Latino culture. The Latino culture has several different components that include a strong sense of family, religion, respect, and a belief in folk healing. These components greatly influence the health choices of Latinas.; Latinas also experience barriers that may prevent them from seeking care. Latinas seek health care services less often than other women, and this plays a role in why they are less likely to be involved in breast cancer screening services (Aguirre-Molina, 2001).; Educating the Latino community about genetic services may assist in obtaining a higher level of involvement of Latinas in breast cancer screening services. Most research and patient literature on breast cancer indicates that Latinas have a greater need for an early detection message.
