Abstract/Summary:
A Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) mechanical model of the breast is developed to assist with understanding changes in breast shape in different imaging devices. Specifically, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Tissue Sensing Adaptive Radar (TSAR) scans based on microwave imaging are examined. The model is based on advanced numerical methods (i.e. CEL), allowing for a more adequate formulation of the soft and incompressible tissues of the breast. The mechanical response of the tissues are based on advanced formulations and experimental data from literature. A realistic geometry generated from an MR image was used as a study case. Specific boundary conditions are applied to the model to predict the shape of the breast in the TSAR prototype, where an immersion medium is used. The accuracy of the model was assessed by comparing the numerical results with a laser scan of the same subject in the TSAR system.
