Abstract/Summary:
Tuberculosis (TB) is a major global health problem. The emergence of drug resistant TB, multi-drug resistance (MDR) in particular, poses a serious threat to TB control especially in developing countries that are already hard-hit by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. MDR-TB is extremely difficult and expensive to treat and cure.;Good TB management can prevent TB drug resistance. The level of drug resistance is a good indicator for the quality of a TB program. However, few countries particularly in Africa, have the resources to test all TB cases for susceptibility to drugs or apply interventions to all TB patients.;A cross-sectional survey and nested case-control study will be used to determine the prevalence of drug resistance at an urban hospital in Uganda and assess the predictors of drug resistance and MDR. The study results may therefore be used in planning for TB control and selecting high-risk patients on whom to apply interventions.
