Abstract/Summary:
This action research project used a qualitative design to explore the various stages and associated dilemmas experienced by an interdisciplinary taskforce team. This study focused on a team formed at Penticton Regional Hospital to address the issue of patient falls. The team's discussion and reflection on the process, content and project direction was audiotaped and transcribed verbatim. Data analysis yielded the following meta-themes: considering team composition carefully, connecting with direct care staff and establishing and maintaining momentum. The findings illuminated the complexities of interdisciplinary taskforce teamwork in a health care environment and identified organizational barriers and external events that hindered this team. Further, it revealed the importance of grassroots participation, facilitative leadership and organizational support.
