Abstract/Summary:
The objective of this study was to examine women of childbearing age related to folate intake, diet quality, body mass index and ethnographic and lifestyle characteristics. Data were from 1994–1996 CSFII and the Diet Health and Knowledge Survey (DHKS). The sample population were non-pregnant, non-lactating women 20 to 50 years old who were divided into two groups: women that had a folate intake of ≥320 μg (Estimated Average Requirement (EAR)) and those that had a folate intake of <320 μg. Women who met the EAR for folate were more likely to be non-black, have more education, be a non-smoker, report vitamin supplement use every day, have a diet lower in fat and cholesterol and higher in vitamins and minerals and report eating more servings of fruits and grains. Results of this study were similar to findings in related studies.
