“Since, patients are typically more highly impacted by the bad news than physicians, a focus on patient's perceptions is warranted” (Ptacek & Ptacek, 2001, p. 4160). The purpose of this study was to describe ovarian cancer patients' recollections about the most recent time they received bad news and what transpired during the bad news transaction. Parse's human becoming theory will be used to guide the study that will focus on the patients' quality of life from the individuals' perspective (Pilkington, 1999). A sample of 5 ovarian cancer patients will be interviewed face-to-face using an in-depth, semi-structured interview guide. Thus, this exploratory study will provide health care professionals with a deeper understanding of the individuals' experience when receiving unfavorable news and provide them with some direction of how to be truly present with patients when delivering bad news (Mitchell & Cody, 1999).
