Abstract/Summary:
Domestication process of woody species in farming systems has became more and more important during the last decades. This process includes production, collection, management and adoption by farmers of improved agroforestry tree germplasm suitable with their needs. However, how could we make accessible and available good quality germplasm to encourage poor farmers to integrate and domesticate more agroforestry tree species in their own farms as people did long time ago for crops and animals?;This research aims to analyse characteristics of demand and supply of agroforestry tree germplasm in Kenya. The theoretical framework is the Structure-Conduct-Performance paradigm, drawn from industrial organisation. This research brings out some socio-economic features which are determinants in the functioning of this "filiere" in Kenya and also in adoption and domestication process of agroforestry tree species by rural populations in their farming systems. This work constitutes also an assessment of the most important socio-economic attributes of agroforestry tree species desired by farmers in the study area, the main forms of germplasm used, the principal sources providing farmers in tree planting materials, and the major constraints affecting the functioning of agroforestry tree "germplasm filiere" in Kenya.
