Abstract/Summary:
Maintenance of efficient plant operations (including disinfection) on a continuous basis, and the inherent role of operations in personnel in achieving these objectives, are receiving greater attention within the water industry. Arising from these issues is a need for high-level knowledge/expertise concerning process operation and control. "CHLOROS", an off-line knowledge-based system which embodies both expert system and hypertext technologies, was developed to address potential plant performance-limiting factors. The hypertext technologies, was developed to address potential plant performance-limiting factors. The hypertext module contains an up-to-date knowledge of chlor(am)ine disinfection process theory and was specifically designed to enhance the operator's understanding of this process. The expert system module contains knowledge necessary to diagnose disinfection-related problems, thus providing problem-solving and decision-making capabilities similar to those typically associated with knowledgeable personnel. "CHLOROS" was designed to be intuitive and easy to use by operators/end-users who have only limited computer literacy, and as such may be implemented as a diagnostic and/or an instructional tool in day-to-day disinfection operations.
