Abstract/Summary:
Nonlinear devices such as compact fluorescent lighting, adjustable speed drives for heat pumps and air conditioners and electric vehicle battery chargers are starting to dominate the residential load. Utility companies could face a very serious power quality problem, if they are not prepared to mitigate the current harmonics. Single-phase active power filters provide a solution for medium power level for a single-phase node on the distribution net-work or at the customers end. This thesis has produced a methodology which introduces design principles for the single-phase APF. Both the CSI APF and the VSI APF are studied, compared and contrasted. A large-signal averaged model is developed to facilitate system analysis, simulation and control design. Since the major drawback of a single-phase APF is its cost, methods for obtaining the most cost efficient APF for a given compensation requirement are introduced. These methods consist of minimizing the passive elements of the APF during steady state operation and transient operation. The minimization process involves the optimization of the control algorithms and the development of a theory for the proper operation of the APF during transients and steady state.
