Abstract/Summary:
The numerical analysis and synthesis of the response of compliant structures such as Spar platforms is of fundamental importance for their design. The dynamic response is due primarily to the ocean waves at the site. The sea states that are of interest for the design process correspond to normal and extreme conditions, such as those spawned by hurricanes.; Due to the nature of these problems, it is expected that the series involved are not Second Order Stationary. Therefore, Fourier analysis is not a suitable tool, for it decomposes the series in frequency components that are not localized in time. Wavelet analysis, which has been developing since the late 1980's, has proven to be a useful technique to address such problems in very diverse engineering fields.; The objective of this study is to investigate the applicability of different wavelet-based techniques to the interpretation of the characteristics of wave records, and the dynamic response of Spar platforms subjected to these waves.
