Power distribution systems are growing more complicated and an overcurrent protection relay with computer intelligence would be useful in coping with this growth. Microprocessors offer a cost-effective way to implement dedicated relays with intelligence. Furthermore, the relay is made more sophisticated by adding recording and communication features. This thesis deals with the design and implementation of a dual processor based inverse time overcurrent relay for power system protection, mainly for the protection of the Capacitor Banks. First, the background of digital relaying and overcurrent relaying in general is briefly presented. The design and construction of the hardware and the algorithm used to simulate an overcurrent relay are discussed. |
